America is so much different than Kenya was. I remember running around in the sand, being cheered on by my fellow classmates. Breathe. I had to remember to breathe. No. I heard him breathing in my ear. I couldn’t let him take the lead from me. Pa would kill me. Pa gets real mad about me losing races. He says if I want to go anywhere in life I have to be a winner. In about 5 paces I would be to the finish. 1… 2… NO! He passed me. But I wasn’t finished with that race yet! If Mama taught me anything it would be to never give up. That’s exactly what I did. I sped up! All I could hear is the wind in my face. A photo finish. I walked over to Pa, sipping out of my water bottle. I half expected him to tell me that I did a good job. But lets just say that by the look on his face, that wasn’t very likely to happen. I literally won by a hair; one sticking up from my head band. I was always known to have a lot of frizzy hairs, and that time they paid off. Papa still didn’t look too happy. He doesn’t like close races like that. I guess he wanted me to get it all or nothing. “UMA!” he growled, “That was too close, Uma. He could have beat you.” Im surprised I got a word out of him because usually when he’s this mad I don’t get a peep. The whole car ride home was akwardly silent. All I heard was the noise of wheels against the road taking us back to old 5243 Jaffer Road. “Pa,” I protested later, in frustration, “I won the race. It’s fine isn’t it? I won. How much more do you want from me?” “Uma now isn’t the time. Papa had a hard day at-.” Mama was interrupted “I just I don’t want you to let it get that close! You should have kept a pace 10 to 20 feet ahead, Uma. You don’t understand. You are a young, foolish child. You did win the race but without your hair he would have got you. Uma you need to learn that not everything is easy and not everytime even a hair can save you.” he raised his tone of voice. I decided that it wasn’t the time to argue. Thinking about everything, I leaned my head against the window to the right of the passenger’s seat. I remember it so vividly. That was such a hard race, and such a horrible punishment, and of course Ma was sure to leave early, leaving Papa all the time in the world to yell at me. I love to race, but it isn’t fair. Just because Pa couldn’t fulfill his dreams in running, it’s not like it should be my responsibility to make up for it. I only knew of one way to make him happier. Only one. I had to take him out to run with me. He loves to run but now that I am not his little girl anymore he doesn’t have anyone to run with. Only me. So I hopped out of the minivan, and slid the door shut. “Papa,” I began, “maybe we should just run.” “What?” he boomed, recovering from the previous conversation. “Please Pa, you love to run, you do.” He cracked a smile, “Uma, I haven’t run in a while, you know that.” “Whats the worst that could happen?” Before I knew it Pa was in his running clothes and ready… to run. Pa wore his old purple running shorts, which are way too short for him now since he hadn’t run in so long, but I didn’t care. I could finally spend some time with my father. Ever since America, there really hasn’t been time for just us. We ran into the cool breeze and it was so quiet that all I could hear was the patting of our feet on the sidewalk.
