Java Network Programming, April 30, 2002

Do you already program in Java? Do you want to go
beyond building neat GUIs for applets or desktop
applications? Java has two great strengths. It was
built with graphical objects (widgets) being an
inherent part of the language. This is an immense
strategic advantage over earlier text-based languages
like C and C++. For graphics, those needed special
graphics libraries that were not part of the original
languages, and which varied from vendor to vendor and
between operating systems. The ease of use of Java
widgets led to its rapid gain of programmers'
mindshare. Indeed, if you look at a row of Java books
in a bookstore, you will see most packed with
attractive diagrams of cool graphics.

But there is a second great advantage of Java. It was
designed with Internet awareness from its inception. C
and C++, due to their earlier vintage, have to use
libraries that vary with the operating system. Java
gives you a consistent interface to network
programming, independent of the operating system. It
is to this exposition that this book from Addison-Wesley
is devoted. Written by two Queenslanders, it assumes
that you already know the rudiments of Java. This is not
a book for tyros. If you want to write a network client
(for example, a specialised mail reader), or a multiplayer
online game, or a software agent that trolls the Internet,
then this book can be very useful.

It describes how to use TCP sockets, UDP datagrams,
multithreading, HTTP and other topics. It expands on
CGI for building applets. For client-server
applications, it devotes entire chapters to servlets
and RMI (Remote Method Invocation). If you need to use
CORBA, maybe because you have some legacy code that
you want to write a Java program to interact with,
then you will find a chapter expounding on it.

If you have already been programming Java GUIs, then
this book will expose you to a more abstract class
of problems. There is no visual feedback from widget

layouts here. What feedback you get is from text-based
output. What you have to design against are problems
based on data flow across a network.

The authors have written clearly, and the code
examples are well done, illustrating simply the
desired concepts, without tangling you in the details.

The only slight critique I have is that there is no
comparative assessment of the network capabilities of
Java vis-a-vis C#/.NET. The latter pair is an even
newer language/programming environment that also has
networking built in. But this may be unfair and
straying from the book's scope. C# and .NET have just
been released by Microsoft, and it is not certain if
they will gain much traction. But if they do, you will
undoubtedly see many books arguing the relative
merits.

Awesome! I am an ITIL professional and have been trying to get my management team to understand what release is for 2 years. Maybe they will believe it if it comes from another source and I can just get them to consume the concepts in this book. They are stuck in 20th century and can not grasp what release and change REALLY are....it is not testing and not project management. It is cutting edge and truely deserves a place in todays IT world. This is absolutely a must read for every IT manager who wants to improve the quality of what they deliver, be educated on new concepts and bring their organization into the 21st century by bring structure and a repeatable process for implementing change. I got this book one evening and read it cover to cover immediately....I could not stop! My problem? I work for a management team that does not read and I need to open their eyes to the possibilities and educate them on what release and change management really are so they can finally have an "AH-HA moment". Please let me know when this will be available in formats for audio disc and iPAD so I can help educate them!

I just read this book for the second time, and it's even better than the first time--now I feel qualified to write a review. In my opinion, this is one of the best books on the subject, and more actionable than the five ITIL v3 volumes developed in the UK by the Office of Government Commerce. The things I like about this book are Larry's style of writing and his organization of the materials. It's clear he knows his subject, and the author has a unique way of taking a complex and sometimes confusing topic and making it not only understandable, but actionable--something you can implement in a straightforward manner. Leveraging the intertwined relationship between Change and Release Management, the story reads much better than if they were discussed separately.

After authoring three books, it's pretty clear that Larry has a talent for reducing hard-to-understand technical subjects into logical prose for the common ITSM practitioner. This book is not for the average pedestrian (it assumes the reader has some understanding of ITIL and service management), but it's not overly technical either, and seems to have found a sweet spot of "just enough" procedural detail. The illustrations are simple yet elegant, not fancy or overdone, and very communicative.

The author's step-by-step approach takes the reader from understanding and defining process requirements and workflows all the way through implementing the new processes through tool selection and integration, data migration, process piloting, and finally broad rollout across IT. In the last two sections, Larry presents operational issues that commonly arise, as well as the integration of Change and Release Management with service level goals and other ITIL processes typically identified by senior management for implementation.

All-in-all, one of the best books I've read on these two ITIL processes.

A good intro book, May 31, 2002

This book is an introduction to four major areas: networking, Java language, Java network programming, and Java distributed computing. Dozens of published books are specifically dedicated to each of these topics in detail, but this book is trying to give a reader a taste of all these technologies at the same time.

The book is easy to read. Most of the material is clearly explained and illustrated. Code examples (demos) are clean and complete. The demos are not contrived, but present to the reader interesting implementations that may be reused and give a good idea of how programs that are commonly used may work (SMTP, POP clients, HTTP server, etc.). Each of the demos is followed by a detailed explanation that focuses on how the demo works.

I like the book, although I think that the chapters covering Java language programming are extraneous: if you don't know Java, you should learn it from Java language specific books first, and only then venture into the advanced topics of Java network and distributed programming.

The book reminds me somewhat of the classic "Unix Network Programming" by Richard Stevens, which was a must for any C/Unix programmer more than a decade ago.

Most of my experience in network programming comes from W. Richard Stevens' "UNIX Network Programming", where there's lots of detail in the TCP/IP protocol, and using C to implement it. At the time, the professor teaching the course tried to provide us with comparable programs in Java, but not having a good Java networking book to consult from was a drawback to those segues.

This book serves as an excellent companion to Stevens' book, so that you can get the feel for how Java accomplishes networking capabilities. I still prefer the TCP/IP detail that Stevens' book provides, but that's mainly because I like the language independent concept of networking.

I created a small client2client messaging applet, sent it to a couple of friends for testing, and enjoyed how quickly and easily it was to get it working. Java abstracts a lot of the detail away from the user, since it was designed from the get-go to include networking capabilities, and this book uses those abstractions to its advantage. I'll probably want to get my hands dirty and see how much hands-on control I can get with Java sometime later.

(Reilly*2)'s book is a great way to just jump into network programming without getting your head too tangled with TCP/IP intricacies. This is not to say that the book doesn't cover those details, but it doesn't delve into them as deeply as Stevens' book does. In my view, that's a drawback to it being an absolute reference, but for many who just want to start developing client/server apps, this may be just what you're looking for.

An excellent change management book, with one reservation, February 27, 2009

Larry Klosterboer, author of "Implementing ITIL Change and Release Management" has written the comprehensive overview of managing ITIL based change strategies for IT Operations Managers and Directors.

So why is a psychologist reviewing an IT change management book?

For starters, many of my clients are IT and information systems specialists. Most are going through pain, change and challenges related to keeping up with the rapidly shifting demands of their customers, the adoption of new technology, and of course, the economy.

What makes this book different is it specifically speaks to the change and release methodologies you need to manage these three technology pressures. In particular, this book focuses on issues of Content, (Structure, Strategy, Process, Product) and Roadmap, (Project management, Governance, Implementation, Contingencies). This is both its strength and weakness.

In a recent interview Klosterboer offered these critical words of advice from his book:

5 must-dos

* Engage the organization-- implementing change and release management cannot be done in a corner.
* Establish strong policies so process documents never need to be interpreted on the fly.
* Use tools to automate the process rather than defining a process which fits the tools.
* Train each person for the role they will fill rather than creating generic process training.
* Build reports that people will use.

5 don'ts

* Don't forget to gather and agree on solid requirements before moving on to implementation.
* Don't believe implementation of a tool is the hardest part.
* Don't think you can implement release management without appropriate staffing.
* Don't underestimate the importance of a definitive media library.
* Don't settle for a general, high-level process that nobody really follows.

It's the very first of these, engaging the organization, that is truly critical, and often overlooked or given not enough attention. Engaging people means getting them to devote their time, talent and trust to supporting your goals.

It's also true that the book deals largely with the Organization level of analysis. To be truly comprehensive change managers need to have a strategy to deal with the Group and Individual dynamics that get stirred up by organizational change.

The various chapters in this book work through the content and roadmap you need to lay out for your organization to get on top of change and release management, using the ITIL structures, but don't provide much detail on how to engage the staff and customers. Add in expertise on the People issues, (Mindsets, Reactions, Engagement, Acceptance, Commitment) or supplement it from elsewhere and the book would be perfect.

In response to Jay Miller's question below there is a book titled "Philosophical and Mathematical Correspondence. Gottlob Frege" that has 21 letters between Russell and Frege over a period of 10 years beginning with Russell's observation of his famous paradox in 1902. This wonderful collection of correspondence was published 20 years before "From Frege to Godel" and includes letters from many of the same mathematicians and logicians.

The perfect math-logic reference, April 19, 2000

This book seems to me an absolute standard for those interested in present day logic and mathematics. Even if understanding the content of the papers is somewhat out of your grasp (as it is for me!), van Heijenoort assists by presenting many fantastic introductory pages.

Interestingly, this tome was also the first (only?) place to publish Russell's letter to Frege (re: Russell's Paradox) and Frege's response.

Fragile, didn't work, September 16, 2011

Many small parts that can get lost easy. The wire connecting the gear fell apart and I had to splice it together. My 8 year old was very frustrated and gave up. It worked few seconds and never worked again, even after I worked with replacing wires and fitting together again. Not worth the money or frustration.
